Which is the maximum temperature for use of technical ceramics?

The maximum temperature recommended to each chemical composition is showing at technical specifications table, however, the component dimensions, mechanical tensions and thermal cycle (heating and cooling) are determining factors for the best performance of the ceramic component. Are technical ceramics resistant to impact?

Technical ceramics are high hardness material and, consequently, brittle and poor impact resistant. However, the proper mounting in mechanical systems with metallic or polymeric matrix has excellent results, for example systems for ballistic protection and applications on mining. Ceramics compositions with yttria-doped zirconia have phase transformations (tetragonal to cubic) inhibiting cracks propagation and enhancing the impact strength. Ask Engecer about your application

Are technical ceramics resistant to thermal shocks?

Technical ceramics while structural elements have low thermal expansion coefficient and low thermal conductivity, allowing internal tensions and cracks when subjected to rapid thermal cycles. Therefore it does not support thermal shock. However some compositions are developed to submit appropriate properties to thermal shock, for example ferrules and welding nozzles. What is the smallest possible dimensional tolerance?

Technical ceramics are materials with high hardness and are only machinable with diamond grinding wheels after sinterization. The dimensional tolerance is result of association among component’s dimensions and the removal process, grinding wheels and the mechanical rigidity of the equipment used. Technical ceramics produced by Engecer are custom made for each specific project and there is no way a catalog of available models.
